Comedy and The Joy of The Lord

Humor is magnetic. I naturally gravitate toward sitcoms or funny movies when I need a laugh. I have a deep admiration for stand-up comedians—those brave souls who step onto a stage with nothing but a script (or an improvised one) and the hope that a room full of strangers will connect with their words. But just like my phone eventually needs a charger after a day of use, I find that comedy, too, has its limits. We have to search for it, go somewhere, or pay something to receive it.

Joy, however, is different. Joy doesn’t charge admission. It’s not a performance—it’s a promise. While comedy offers a momentary spark, joy is a steady flame. As apprentices of Jesus, we know that joy is not something we have to chase down; it’s already been given to us. It's a gift from God, ready to be accepted—not earned. And unlike comedy, joy doesn’t depend on a punchline—it depends on a Person.
